Before the grocery store. Before the supermarket. Before the can aisle existed at all — someone printed these by hand, one color at a time.

This is an original evaporated milk can label — a 1932–1933 stone lithograph for Roseco Brand, made in Minnesota. It has never been used. Never wrapped a can. It is New Old Stock in excellent mint condition — and its survival story is one of the best in the collecting world.

During Prohibition, a Minnesota brewery found itself unable to make beer. Rather than close, they pivoted entirely to canning milk — a large operation, processing milk for companies across the country. The companies sent their labels; the brewery canned the milk and sent it back. The moment Prohibition ended, the brewery returned immediately to beer. Thousands of canning labels were left sitting in the basement. They stayed there, untouched and undamaged, for decades — until they were found. This label is one of them. Two available.

The label itself is among the most beautiful dairy labels of the era. A Jersey cow stands beside the traditional milking stool and bucket, rendered in true-to-life color with the tonal richness that stone lithography at its best could achieve. Gold leafing throughout lifts the whole composition — visible in the photographs, it gives the label a warmth and depth that offset printing never replicated. One of the prettiest dairy labels anywhere, by any measure.

Frame it as farmhouse or dairy decor, as Prohibition-era American history, or as a piece of 1930s commercial art at its most accomplished. At 9.75 by 3.5 inches it suits a narrow frame beautifully.

A wonderful gift for a dairy history enthusiast, a Prohibition history collector, a farmhouse decor lover, or anyone who appreciates that the best stories sometimes come wrapped around a can of milk.

A note on can label collecting: Original lithographic can labels from this era are far scarcer than crate labels — produced in smaller quantities, more fragile, and less often preserved. NOS examples like this one represent the finest of what survives from American food industry history.
