Meggy MacIntosh

"Meggy MacIntosh" is a compelling work of historical fiction set against the turbulent backdrop of the American Revolution. The story follows the journey of Meggy MacIntosh, a young Scottish orphan living in Edinburgh, who feels isolated and out of place in her cold, aristocratic surroundings. Driven by a sense of adventure and a deep admiration for the legendary heroine Flora MacDonald, Meggy makes the bold decision to run away and sail for the American colonies in 1775.Upon arriving in North Carolina, Meggy discovers a land on the brink of upheaval. As the colonies struggle for independence from British rule, Meggy finds herself torn between her ancestral loyalty to the Scottish Highlanders who remained faithful to the King and the burgeoning spirit of liberty she encounters in the New World. This coming-of-age narrative explores themes of identity, bravery, and the complex choices individuals must make when their personal convictions clash with tradition. Through Meggy's eyes, readers gain a vivid perspective on the immigrant experience in colonial America and the social tensions that shaped a new nation. Elizabeth Janet Gray's meticulous attention to historical detail brings the landscape of 18th-century North Carolina and the spirit of its people to life in this enduring tale of courage and self-discovery.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
