The Merchant. The Braggart Warrior. The Haunted House. The Persian (Latin Edition)

"The Merchant. The Braggart Warrior. The Haunted House. The Persian" is a masterful collection of four comedies by the legendary Roman playwright Titus Maccius Plautus. As a significant volume in the Plautine corpus, it features some of the most vibrant and enduring works of the Latin stage, showcasing the humor and linguistic inventiveness that defined the genre of fabula palliata. In "The Merchant", a father and son become rivals in love, resulting in a series of farcical domestic entanglements. "The Braggart Warrior" introduces Pyrgopolynices, a vain soldier whose pomposity is cleverly undermined by his subordinates. "The Haunted House" presents a witty tale of deception where a clever slave creates a ghost story to protect his master's secret lifestyle from an returning father. Finally, "The Persian" rounds out the collection with an intricate plot involving a mock auction and comedic trickery. Plautus is renowned for his dynamic use of language, slapstick humor, and the development of stock characters that would later influence literary giants like Shakespeare and Molière. These plays serve as a vital link to the social and theatrical culture of the Roman Republic, offering timeless insights into human nature through brilliant comedic timing and sharp social observation. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
